Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered two sections in his textbook. One section had just been covered in class while the other would be covered within the next few days. The sections focused on circle theorems, specifically those involving the tangents and secants of circles. The first section covered the theorems relating the tangents, secants, and chords to their inscribed arcs. The second section covered included the intersecting chords theorem, the tangent-chord theorem, the secant product theorem, and the tangent-secant product theorem. The student easily digested the meanings of the theorems. We derived most of the theories to see where they came from so that the theories would be more easily applied on questions. We went through the homework assigned for the first section, also. Overall, it was a productive session."
"Law of Sines was the new concept introduced in school that day. Student is attentive and motivated to learn. Our strategy is to: correlate language to symbols and diagrams and to do internet search for key terminology/word derivation. Student reported understanding during in-school class review of Special Triangles from previous tutoring session. For English we worked on sentence structure: an explicit subject is required in each sentence and pronouns must reference the immediately preceding subject. Written response to a question homework is to compose response to address the subject of the question explicitly and to review question to ensure response answers question completely."
"The student and I reviewed for her unit test on circles eclipses and hyperbolas. Specifically, we practiced completing the square in order to convert functions into the standard form of circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas. Standard form helped us locate the center (h,k) and understand the behaviors of each graph. We reviewed a few algebra foundations such as factoring and completing the square in order to solve for intercepts."
"Today, the student needed assistance with some more advanced geometry proofs. I assisted him with his homework on these proofs. We also went on to review right triangle trigonometric relationships (Sin, Cos, Tan, etc.), and their inverses (arcsin, arccos, arctan, etc.). I taught him the two special triangles (45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangles) and why they are so important."
"Today the student told me that the school's pace in geometry classes is very slow right now, so we are reviewing for his PSAT on this coming Wednesday. He had a PSAT training exam that we went through, reviewing concepts of arithmetic, algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, and statistics. He could see the solution for some problems he forgot how to solve. He now has a better understanding of the kind of problems and methods of solution he will face on the PSAT."
"This was my first tutoring session with the student. He had a worksheet on properties of triangles, which he had to complete for homework. He worked well on the problems. I noticed that while solving an equation, he does an unnecessary division by the variable, and I mentioned that to him. It was very nice to see that he adjusted his writing right away; he remembered to write the solution in a correct way. We met today so that he could get extra help before his quiz on Tuesday. There will be one more topic on this quiz, which is Triangle Congruence. We went over the main idea of proving the congruence of triangles, choosing some examples from his textbook. I hope he will do well on the quiz. It was very nice to meet him and his mother, and I am looking forward to our next tutoring session."
