Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked today on finding the absolute values of integers. She used a number line to locate integers and to explain that the absolute value was the distance from zero. She easily identified the absolute value of numbers. She was able to explain the difference between absolute value and opposites, especially when working with negative integers. She initially struggled trying to find negative fractions on the number line, so we practiced locating positive and negative fractions in the number line. Lastly, we reviewed unit conversions, the concept we had worked on in the previous session."
"For Student A, we went over the rules of exponents (multiplying and raising to powers), and for Student B, we worked on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of negative numbers, and also a basic discussion of exponents (definition of exponents and roots). I also spent a half hour chatting with their mother about their performance and progress."
"We covered conservation of momentum for various systems. The set up and the choice of conservation equations are the challenging aspects of these problems, and the student overall seemed comfortable. Because we had some extra time, I covered rocket science and change in mass rather than simply change in velocity momentum conservation problems."
"We covered comparing and ordering positive rational numbers and equivalent numbers. The student converted all of the fractions to decimals to order the positive rational numbers. She utilized the cross product property to compare two fractions. She used the appropriate sign to compare the two fractions. She was able to convert between fractions, decimals, and percents for equivalent numbers. She was a very laborious scholar today. She definitely had a productive session."
"Student A and I covered compound interest and continuously compound interest. Student B reviewed linear equations and translations. Student C reviewed geometric means, special right triangle, and altitudes."
"During this session, we continued working on applying proportionality to percents. The student had more word problems and needed clarification on how to set up proportions when finding the tip percent for a bill. We did several problems and talked through how to interpret "total" within the context of different word problems. We will continue working on percentages, discounts and tips."
