How can Chemistry tutoring help you succeed?

Chemistry class includes topics you may be somewhat familiar with - the periodic table, liquids and gases, matter, volume, etc. In this branch of science, however, there is more than meets the eye. Matter and its chemical properties, molecules, and atoms are governed by forces and laws that you may not see but your tutor may explain in more detail. Chemistry class may cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time - more than it takes to fully comprehend thermodynamics or kinetics. A private tutor may give you the time and attention needed to learn at your own pace. For assistance in connecting with an experienced chemistry tutor in Dayton, OH, contact one of our educational directors.

Our team may assess your exact learning needs. They choose an independent tutor who specializes in your area of concern and who may implement the tools and methods that match your abilities and learning style. Your instructor may identify and target the topics of most concern and briefly review what you already know. Each lesson is tailored to you. There is no "one-size fits all" approach that may leave you behind in a classroom. This saves a lot of time and mental energy. Work to make your study more efficient by using an expert chemistry tutor in Dayton.

Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

Dayton, OH Chemistry tutoring
We worked on problems covering the relationships between energy, wavelength, and frequency. Also, we worked problems on the Bohr effect and quantum numbers. The student really understands these concepts and did not need much help with the material.

We went over practice exercise number 4 and completed the entire quiz with 30 questions. We learned more about solubility constants, Bronsted Lowry, and Lewis definitions of acids and bases. We learned about the reactions of valence shell electrons and valence numbers. We learned basic conventions for naming compounds. We reviewed some of the material from earlier as some sections are presenting again in a different form.

The student has been doing better in class. He has a test coming up this week. We continued to both review topics and look ahead. He had some, but not all, of his materials today. We used the textbook to introduce intermolecular attractive forces. We continued to review ionic and covalent bonding and characteristics, Lewis dot structures, VSEPR, and polarity. I continued to have him take notes, since this is not something he does extensively either during class or for homework. Another strategy we used was choosing end-of-chapter questions from the textbook. Since his teacher does not cover every textbook topic, it is sometimes hard for the student to pick out relevant questions. I suggested that in the future he ask his teacher for recommended questions.

Today was our first session. The student said she knew her stuff, but her tests do not show that. I noticed that she has difficulty with open-ended paragraph-style questions the most because she has to form her own sentences. Some sentences would not be complete, and sometimes she seemed a bit hesitant in collecting her thoughts. We first reviewed her latest test and talked about Lewis structures, valence electrons, and molecular shapes. She did well with molecular shapes, but needed a reminder for the other two subjects. Then we talked about intermolecular forces, especially related to evaporation rates. After that, we addressed polarity of molecules. She is open to learning and, after some explanation, she got the concepts. We then moved on to balancing equations and reviewing the types of reactions. She got those concepts pretty quickly, which was great!

We went over calorimetry, thermodynamic equations, and specific heat. The student was struggling the most with calorimetry because she didn't have a good understanding of the associated equation and how to use it. We went through the details of the Q=MCAT equation and spent some time talking about what exactly specific heat is a measure of. We also tried to use the word problem technique where the student has to restate the question using no numbers at all for one problem and it seemed to work. We will be using that technique again in subsequent sessions. I didn't leave her with any extra practice as the homework problems assigned by the professor are definitely sufficient practice.
