Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"At the end of our last session, I asked the student what she thought she needed to review and practice, and what types of problems she struggled with. She identified converting decimals, fractions and percentages as well as multiplying and dividing fractions as problem areas . During today's session we reviewed each process and then practiced. I explained the process to the student, she took notes, and then I modeled how to use the process. She then did several practice problems, most of which she got correct. We ended with a review of all of the processes covered, and she got them all correct. I explained to her that it will be through ongoing practice and repetition that she will retain and thus easily recall the processes for solving these types of problems. Procedural fluency will be crucial for her when it comes to testing. We are going to work on positive and negative numbers next session, as she did hesitate a few times when they were in practice problems. We will use a number line to show the relationship between positive and negative numbers, and review the process for working with them."
"I started by showing her how to use the chain rule then showed a proof of the product rule. We worked on test corrections that involved problems using derivatives, how to find a line tangent and normal to a point and a product rule question. The student is good at math and understands the mechanics but is not writing down all her steps and has small problems organizing the equations. We will work on these things in our next session."
"The student had an assignment on variance and ANOVA. We covered the principles behind F-distribution based statistics, reviewing the concepts of hypothesis testing and significance. We also covered how to use Excel to perform T-tests, F-tests, and ANOVA. He is still a little shaky on the theory and vocabulary, but understands the application."
"The student had a midterm coming up so we went over her review sheet and worked through each problem. The problems consisted of domain and range, piecewise functions, solving g(x) functions, and factoring. She knew the material well and understood the problems and what little mistakes she was making. I believe she will do good on her midterm next week!"
"During this session, we did a quick review of basic math concepts (fractions, addition, subtraction) and spent most of the time working on concepts taught in the student's current math class. We reviewed exponent rules and discussed square roots. We also spent some time talking about simplifying equations and the order of operations. He does very well on each topic individually, but when I have him work on problems that combine these concepts, he seems to struggle a little bit. I plan to have him continue strengthening his basic math skills so he is confident in using these skills in more difficult math problems."
"Today we worked on the review for the chapter test the student has this coming week. We worked on solving system of two linear equations, inequalities by graphing, elimination and substitution methods. We worked on the application problems, setting up equations and inequalities, and finding the maximum and minimum values using the coordinates of the feasible region."
