Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we mostly reviewed the distributive property, variables, simple problem solving, and how to find the area of a trapezoid. Everything was a review of previously covered concepts except the trapezoid's area. The girls did a great job with the old and new material. They initially struggled with the trapezoid's area but after a few times, they had a fairly strong grasp of the concept."
"We covered geometry and solving equations with one variable. The geometry portion specifically was about finding the volume of a sphere. With the solving equations portion we worked on equations that had fractions in them. The student was struggling with solving equations with fractions in them; he said he did not remember how to do them. I do believe that by the end of the session he was more familiar with this concept. I will review it with him next week to make sure. With this material the best way to study is going to be more practice which we will continue to do in our sessions."
"Once again, we reviewed the student's homework, and I helped her to understand the corrections that were needed. Today we learned about lines of symmetry. We used paper & scissors to fold & cut, making our own shapes & understanding the concept of symmetry. We also learned more about shapes - squares, rectangles, triangles...even different types of triangles (equilateral, isosceles, right angled). We also learned about perimeter - what it is and how to measure it. Then we practiced problems like: If you know the length of 1 side of a square, what is the perimeter? If you know the length of 1 side of an equilateral triangle, what is the perimeter? I wanted her to understand both the concepts of the shapes and how to calculate the perimeter. I brought a book, entitled A Princess Primer, that she was able to "win" today by solving 2 problems that proved she understood the new material we were covering. Besides some homework math problems to work on, I am (hoping) she really enjoys her new book & have assigned a writing project based on it."
"We worked on solving and simplifying algebraic equations, finding the area of a triangle, multiplying fractions, percent, and problem solving. The student was great at problem solving and she was doing calculations in her head. She said they were working on order of operations in class. She even set up a problem and solved it herself, so has obviously mastered that skill."
"Today we worked through problems to help the student prepare for his section 3.1-3.4 test on Monday. He seems confident in all the sections."
"Today the student worked on multiplication of single digit numbers as well as practicing multiplication using visuals. She also worked on fractions by finding the fractions of a shaded area in rectangles. She also practiced shading in parts of shapes according to the given fractions. She worked on drawing shapes as well as finding parts of a whole with fractions. She is doing very well on understanding these concepts. I also gave her some multiplication homework to do before the next session."
