Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"On Saturday the student and I worked on reading fluency passages from the 2nd grade assessment packet. We also worked on identifying adjectives and adverbs in sentences as well as finishing up "The Frog Prince." The student also read a level J book. Our goal is for the student to read level J and K books with accuracy and fluency so he can continue to move up reading levels at school."
"We worked on more test prep practice today. He continues to do better with questions that are in the text (and is starting to return to the text to check his answers). We are also working on using outlines to plan written responses prior to answering a short response or essay question."
"I met with the student and his mother for our primary session. We discussed some of the issues that were concerning her. I administered a test starting at pre-primer up to third grade. He stumbled on a word a couple of times but self-corrected and finished the list. I asked him to get a book that he likes and to read a page. Further sessions we will be working on his school assignments as well as reading from his books."
"We went over the student's essays for graduate school, focusing on the personal statement. We did a close line-by-line edit of this, jointly considering how he could best streamline it to reflect his priorities and goals. Making sure each paragraph was cohesive and contributed to the arc of the essay was our main stylistic goal. In the end, the essay was a much better written reflection of his articulate and passionate self-expression."
"We went over the student's first long form assignment. He did a solid job on analyzing the conclusion of 1984. During the lesson, we fleshed out the paper and spent the last 30 minutes working on editing. I assigned him some editing of his paper. The goal is to get rid of all repetitious language and run-on sentences and to flesh out any unanswered questions."
"We went over the student's paper from beginning to end, sentence by sentence, to correct any mistakes he had. We read most of the paper aloud, so that we could identify and correct the various mistakes. He needed to add more to his paper and was going to do so. We discussed possibly having another session before the paper is due. He is also going to finish his final draft today."
