The student and I covered introductory material, such as the alphabet in Spanish and how to pronounce each letter of the alphabet. He struggled on how to say and pronounce the letters E, H, I, J, and X in Spanish, but he has potential to advance further. The student demonstrated a lot of enthusiasm in his desire to learn the language. I was able to help him pronounce each letter of the alphabet in Spanish correctly until he said each of them right, so I did include memorization and hands-on practice skills. He did pretty well in his first session.

The student and I covered the preterite tense (simple past) of verbs to prepare him for his make-up exam tomorrow. This included exceptions to the rule. We also reviewed the meanings of various verbs. He needed help remembering both the meaning of individual words and the grammar required to conjugate verbs in Spanish. However, he responded well to the way that we first mapped out the rules, and then applied them to specific cases. It takes many times over to register new foreign language words in the memory, so my goal is to use this kind of repetition to help him with the areas of Spanish where he is struggling.

The student and I discussed a new book and his summary of it. We spoke about expressions with prepositions such as "de," "por," and "para." She will read the next book and provide a summary. If her book is unavailable, she will describe her week or weekend in the past tense, remembering to use both the preterite and imperfect tenses.
