Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on reading fluency passages from the assessment packet. We also read two books. I taught him what prefixes are, and we worked on the prefixes "re and un". We also worked on identifying nouns and adjectives in sentences. The next session we will work on suffixes and adverbs and continue with reading fluency."
"We completed another practice test, this time with a non-fiction text. The student did well with the content, and out of the 10 questions, only missed one. For the CR questions, we revisited the need to utilize text quotes to support the answer. I then introduce him to an activity that covered key words often found in questions. He enjoyed the challenge of the scatter component which involved matching terms to definitions under a certain time."
"The student and I worked on her daily reading log, choosing the book "The Hubbub Above" to read and answer a focus question about. She always seems excited about the books she reads. We then worked on spelling words and did a word search together, which we finished before the end of the session, and she did very well at this. I told her to practice her spelling words this week so we can play a spelling practice game next week after we finish her reading log."
"Today we started with working on class-assigned math homework in division of decimal patterns. After completing and checking it, I reviewed shades of meaning with the student and we looked at lists of related words, placing them in order of weakest to strongest. That exercise also was an aid to increasing his vocabulary for less familiar words such as gusty and nippy. Then he independently read a nonfiction article on great white sharks, circling words or terms he was unfamiliar with. We then went over those terms and took turns rereading the article, discussing it and clarifying misread words. When he finished, he wrote three new things he learned about great whites. Finally, he answered ten comprehension and vocabulary questions on the text, missing only one. He was very focused and we had a lively discussion about ovoviviparous creatures."
"Today we worked on another passage. The student struggled with the reading and reread the passage to work on her fluency. She did a great job with answering the comprehension questions verbally and then going back and locating details to support her answer. When answering questions in complete sentences, we worked on using part of the question to create a complete sentence. She did a fantastic job on her vocabulary activity. She said she loves doing the vocabulary activities!"
"Today we worked on editing the student's English essay. She had chosen a great topic and conducted excellent research. Her draft was very good, so we just reviewed the organization and created a thesis statement. We also reviewed the grammar and worked on being more specific in her essays."
