Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is in Consumer Mathematics and he worked on a review sheet for a test tomorrow. The review included changing percents into decimals, calculating price per ounce, sales tax, tips, shipping & handling cost, etc."
"This large session covers the first 3 sessions I have had with the student during this academic year. We have worked on both homework and preparing for a quiz & test in Algebra 2. He seems to be understanding everything well with very few stumbling points. I think if we keep on top of the work & new material as it comes in, he should continue to do well in this course."
"We reviewed the science homework, which the student did very well on. She felt she had a better understanding of how to approach the questions and the passages. We then completed a quick lesson for the remaining sections, as she decided to take the upcoming test. For English, we discussed mainly verb tense and rhetorical skills, such as redundancy and transitions. For Math, we looked at word problems and coordinate geometry/angles. Lastly, for Reading, we discussed rephrasing questions and paragraphs to make them easier to understand."
"The student and I went over some homework together. He was assigned to read a paragraph-long story and then draw the elements of that story in a large box below it. We read the story together and then dissected it, focusing on words that made him create mental images that would help him remember the story better. Afterwards, he was able to draw the main ideas from the story."
"The student finished the remainder of chapter 7 and worked out the problems relating to kinetic energy change. We then began with chapter 9 and briefly looked at some of the concepts including angular velocity and acceleration. Chapter nine involved collisions and momentum."
"Reviewed future assignment for History. Researched relevant NGOs and GOs, built outline. Assigned draft completion. Reviewed Book Trailer concept, theme, and built rough outline. Assigned storyboard and image collection. Reviewed Book Review concept, built outline, discussed relevant themes for inclusion, and quotes for support. Assigned additional research in historical context and draft completion. Discussed possible NGO involvement as last history assignment for the year."
"The student and I went over all of his homework that is due for Monday. He had everything done, but needed to have a couple more details with his papers. He should do very well this coming year, and I look forward to working with him over the fall semester."
"The student and I worked on composing a good essay. I taught about coming up with a good thesis statement and ultimately writing a beautiful introductory paragraph. Next, we developed two of the points mentioned in the introduction and then ended with a nice conclusion."
"The student and I had our first session today, and I think it went really well! Her mother wanted us to work on her math homework over the Pythagorean theorem first. The student knew how to set up all of the problems. I was very happy with her grasp of the concepts. We had some time left over, so I helped her with her biology homework on mitosis and protein synthesis. After we went over the concepts through various visual activities, I had her lead me through her own explanations, and she was able to verbalize everything correctly. I gave her a couple of activities that she could do as practice."
"We talked about what the student found challenging when she took the SAT in November. Based on this, we mainly focused on writing multiple choice and reading sections. We discussed specific grammatical principles (to be expanded on in future sessions) as well as overall test-taking strategies."
"We went through words and sentences that were a challenge for him in the last 3-4 sessions. We also finished an activity book and then read a book I brought, which he was very interested in."
"The student and I had a brief session to review the last 2 class sessions before her exam on Thursday. We covered substitution by several methods and short test taking tips. We will review the practice exam I sent her during our next session on Wednesday."
