Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"After discussing bonds and chemical reactions (Physical Science), we switched to Algebra 2. While we were working on Algebra 2 we discussed the distributive property and completed problems that focused on PEMDAS."
"The student and I went through Chapter 7 of his text book and reviewed several topics that we've previously covered, but we went into great depth discussing each section individually. We also talked about the vertical line test and how to use it to determine functions."
"The student finished his summer homework book and started his first day of school last Thursday. We went over his class curriculum and his first day of homework. Since he was covering number lines, I taught the natural extension to the quadratic plane, and he learned about points on the plane, lines between points and their slope, and positive and negative slope."
"We reviewed the topics that the student had worked on the last week in school. We worked on multiple problems of the distributive property. He seems to understand the concept."
"We reviewed multiplying/dividing, add/subtract variables and solving expressions. The student has a test this Thursday. She was slightly challenged with how to solve variables that have numbers multiplied or divided by them but after we worked through some problems she seems to have grasped the concept well. She seems ready for her test!"
"The student and I did a quick over view of exponents and their properties as well as complex fractions. I feel like he is able to figure out what to do, but sometimes guesses on his steps. I made sure to clarify some things, but honestly, he seemed to know it fairly well. I told him to look at some more problems and make sure he is ready for his test tomorrow."
"Today I helped the student prepare for her test tomorrow that will cover solving and graphing functions, transformations, composite functions, domain and range, and more. In our review today, she had the most difficulty with visualizing transformations. However, with extra practice from the book and the online graphing tool available to her, she has all the tools necessary to excel. I left her with extra practice consisting of the chapter test in the book and more problems from the review exercises. In addition, I advised her to begin studying for an exam in the future at least one week prior to the exam date so as to give her enough time to prepare."
"The student showed me his completed notes for social studies, and we worked on writing up notes on a subject of his choice in math. We chose "converting decimals to fractions" because he does not have as strong of a grasp on this subject. We worked through definitions, words, and translating math to writing. Once we finished this up, we worked on converting decimals to percentages and simplifying fractions for the rest of the session. I also gave him the homework of looking up words whose definition or spelling he doesn't know when he hears/reads/thinks of them."
"We covered using L'Hopital's rule to find limits and identifying indeterminate forms. On the student's last quiz she earned a 71.25% which we hoped to improve before her next test, and she struggled most with modifying functions into a form where using L'Hopital's rule was viable. I left her with the alternate quiz her teacher gave her and have no concerns at this time."
"Today we worked on rounding, [<,>,=], decimals, and expanding forms. The student understands the problems after a while; he requires more practice and needs to pay more attention to details. Afterwards we worked on a bar graph for science and did a word search for his science vocabulary words."
"We completed his 2nd homework assignment and started on the 3rd. The material covered was graphing functions / analyzing graphs of functions (domain, range, min, max) and determining whether functions are even/odd. I helped him with small things (notation, mostly) but he completed most of it on his own."
"The student is taking Geometry as well as Physics this year and she took an Algebra review test this past week and did not do well at all. She will be re-taking this test and so we worked on her review packet. For the most part, she knew what she was doing, she just seemed to make some small errors which lead to the answer being incorrect. She had some difficulty with radicals and prefect square problems but we practiced those as well. She also did well in graphing and I believe she should do well on this retake. We will be meeting this Sunday for an extra session since she has her first Geometry exam on Monday and does not understand it well."
