Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over her vocab to prepare her for her quiz on Tuesday. For math, she's covering graphing/how to find the equation of a line. She has a pretty hard time with it, but I think she's caught on. She does best with patterns, so if she learns how to do it once she can usually go back through her work and figure out how to do a similar problem the second time through."
"Student did well with fractions and interpreting them. We will work with creating a number line and finding common denominators. We also reviewed material she is learning now in class, including addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals. She works through these subjects with relative ease."
"Today was our first session. We discussed his exam and the Math portion of the test. It will cover Algebra and functions. We reviewed adding and subtracting negative numbers, substituting numbers for variables, and solving for a variable. We will continue to cover these areas and increase his understanding of the material."
"We spent most of the session going over and analyzing the student's scores from her last SAT, so that we could decide where to start. We began going over the Critical Reading section, going over problems together and working through how to eliminate answer choices and when to know to skip a question."
"The student and I spent 30 minutes studying vocabulary and using words in unique sentences. We had a brief conversation about Latin roots, which she found interesting. We continued a review of the section and I coached her through the key strategies for mastering passage-based questions. She applied my advice to the 1st practice set and achieved over 65% with minimal coaching. We will continue to refine her use of the techniques next time. We also did a brief 20 minute review of Geometry to be continued next time."
"The student had a review packet to go over as a practice exam for the final. He seemed to do well on the older material that he had learned before I started helping him out. Final is Wednesday, so we are trying to complete the packet."
"One of my students was on a nature hike today, so I just worked with the other student. He reported several successes, including a recent math test. The student had some poetry reading and questions to answer. His biggest hurdle is simply getting started - once he gets going, he is able to be quite successful!"
"Kept on going over analogies and went through even more vocab words. Confirmed my suspicions that the math is not going to be an issue. Then we did a couple of reading sections. Those went well; we'll have to see how the practice test goes- the reading sections aren't hard. So we will see how the practice test goes and move on from there. "
"The student and I talked in more depth about functional analysis, going so far as to extend the concepts he has been learning into three and higher dimensions. He does very well when I challenge him to think deeper about whatever subject matter he is working with, understanding his material beyond what is required to do his homework problems."
"The student and I worked on ACT prep this session. We did English, science and math. She only had issues with the last few math questions which tend to be the hardest. She did well in science considering she has only taken Biology. She also did well on English due to strong writing skills. I am still pushing her to take a practice test."
"We reviewed the cell cycle and mitosis. I helped her memorize the five stages of mitosis and review what controls the checkpoints in the cell cycle. We also went over binary fission, unicellular vs multicellular replication, and the evolution of replication."
"I had the student take a diagnostic practice test during our session so I could gauge his knowledge of computer science. He answered questions about basic logic, for loops, recursion, arrays, and inheritance. Afterwards we discussed the AP test and talked a little bit about test taking strategies."
