Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over Latin subjunctive forms. We reviewed two uses of the subjunctive he went over in school this week, purpose clauses and indirect questions. We went over a couple of practice translations. We also discussed his upcoming English writing project and did a few reading comprehension questions."
"We worked on Latin and Math in preparation for the student's exams this week. We made it about halfway through her math review and went through three chapters of Latin."
"This session, we translated the beginning of a passage from chapter 14 of Latin. While translating, we discussed grammatical concepts such as the 5th declension, gerundives, and reflexive pronouns. We also discussed and practiced applying translation strategies (1. Identify and parse verbs, 2. Identify main verbs, 3. Identify subjects, 4. Note patterns in sentence construction, 5. Mark off prepositional phrases). We covered a lot of grammatical concepts rather quickly. The student needs to review basic concepts in order to move on to more nuanced translation. To this end, I asked the student to finish translating the passage on his own and apply these strategies. I also asked him to review the supine, gerundive, and reflexive pronoun using the outlines I sent him."
"We read several more pages of the book on "Don Quijote." We move more slowly through this one since it has more text and is all in Spanish. However, I think the student is getting intrigued by the story. We looked again at a map of Spain, talked about knights and looked at some images of knights of the round table in armor to set context. We also talked about why people speak Spanish in the Americas (Spanish colonization) and how a big chunk of western and southwestern U.S. used to be Spanish-speaking and part of Mexico prior to the Mexican-American war. He seemed to take this in more than he had when we touched on it previously. In the future, I will teach him some basic sayings in Spanish."
"We refreshed last topics seen and started with verbs with stem changes. Student is always applied and knows more than what she thinks. She needs to develop her conversational skills, along with grammar studies."
"We reviewed a quiz with filling the blanks and matching. We went over the conjugation of verbs Tener and Haber, and also the conjugation of some irregular verbs in the "yo" form."
