Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began the session by reviewing the student's progress with her test prep book. She sent me a practice Analyzing an Issue essay, and I gave her specific feedback on that essay (avoid first person, avoid "self-conscious" language that refers to the prompt or the essay, use very definitive language, and use more specific examples) before moving on to general strategies. We went over a basic template for both Argument and Issue essays, and I've emailed her a summary both of this template and of some general strategies to keep in mind for the essay section. We then spent some time reviewing a sample Analyzing an Argument essay, which was much more challenging for her. After we broke down the prompt and discussed improvements to her sample essay, I gave her a prompt for another Analyzing an Argument essay, and we ran through the general approach she would take. I'm also emailing her a list of essay prompts, and for homework for next Thursday she'll try to write 2 Argument essays and 1 Issue essay. This was a great session - we covered lots of ground and shouldn't have to spend much more time on the essays in future meetings."
"This session was mostly a review based on the college entrance exam. The student needs some review with the vocabulary for the discrete verbal questions. However, we did work through the logic of these problems, which hopefully she will now apply to a number of practice problems from the prep text. She did rather well on the math, given where we started. She did a great deal of review work before our session, so this helped immensely. We also looked over an issue essay. We will look over one of each essay next time as well. She clarified her writing style and will work on making the argument more formalized."
"We covered essays, and quantitative practice problems. She showed good improvement. We are now past learning concepts and are working on solidifying them. She is going to practice an essay over the weekend as well as some math for us to go over on Monday."
