Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent the entire time working through a math homework project. The topic was vectors, slope, and the distance of a line in coordinate geometry. These concepts she worked well with. At the end we attempted to use coordinate geometry to prove if a set of points created a parallelogram, rhombus or rectangle. The concept of proofs is still very rudimentary in her mind."
"Today the student finalized her list of quotes, organized her points, made a rough outline, and began filling out some of the points on her outline with rough sentences."
"The student was a star today! His mother downloaded an app where he can play spelling and phonics games, which we were able to work on together, and he had so much more enthusiasm than two weeks ago. He responds very well to immediate gratification for his work (he earns coins with every three correct answers and the coins can be spent on virtual stickers). We still have to work on him sounding all the letters out. I feel that he will continue to improve and perhaps even hit the goal of writing small sentences by the end of summer."
"The student and I spent the session focused entirely on statistics. It turns out that this is more a finance/statistics course and the material focuses a lot on algebra. He wanted to do corrections on his past quizzes in which he can receive partial credit. The topics of the quizzes included loan interest, monthly payments, and investment interest."
"Today we did an extensive review of circle problems, and functions. These were areas that the student had some trouble with last week so I brought extra worksheets of particularly difficult questions - the types that she might see toward the end of a math section. The student continues to do very well on the Reading and Writing sections, although she had a few issues with conditional tenses on this week's writing section. We will review that in more detail next week."
"The student and I reviewed simple harmonic motion and began to discuss thermal physics. She seems like a strong and intelligent student and earned a B in her IB class last semester. We will try to clean up her lab reports in future meetings."
"Session included review of solving and simplifying polynomial expressions. Determining greatest common factors between polynomials was also covered, along with efficient use of the zero product property."
"I chose a more challenging story for the student to read today and he did okay. The words he struggled with we took notes on and then practiced in sentences."
"The student and I went over trigonometric identities properties, as well as sum & difference formulas. I showed him how to manipulate and analyze various trigonometric identities to arrive at a specific result. All this is done in preparation for his exam on Tuesday. The session went well."
"Met with the student for a final review of the material in preparation for his exam. Reviewed the material covered in the previous exams and answered any remaining questions that he had. Created a review sheet during the session that contained all relevant formulas and techniques that would be needed on the exam. He seems comfortable with applying the material, but I stressed that he would need to memorize the formulas and mathematical properties if he wanted to do as well as possible."
"Once again, I went through her essay while she took a vocabulary quiz that I had made. Then we discussed both of these. We then worked through a few math practice tests, including algebra and word problems. Lastly, we went through a very difficult reading passage and discussed how to handle reading sections if we can't understand what they are talking about."
"We went over and organized the student's final essay outline for English, his essay was about Romeo and Juliet. He was required to write an outline arguing one of several essay prompts he was given. I helped him to organize his thoughts and write a clear thesis. I then showed him how to write the intro paragraph (for later when he begins to write the essay), the body paragraphs, and how to incorporate supporting quotations. He finished his outline and understood how to go about writing the essay."
