Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent most of our time on determining the electron configuration of elements. We discussed how to apply the Aufbau principal, Hund's rule and the Pauli exclusion principal to determine the configurations. Talked about the N, l, Ml and Ms designation to determine the electron configuration. Exceptions for the electron configuration were Cr and Mo and Cu and Ag that borrow an s-orbital electron to give half- or fully-filled d-orbitals respectively."
"We went over the entirety of the chemistry test review and placed special interest on orbitals. Next week we will focus much more on algebra depending on the results of the chemistry test."
"We solved problems in the Group 16 elements chapter. These involved VSEPR, molecular orbitals, and the Born-Haber cycle."
"At this session the student and I did a review of all her material to prepare her for her 9-week exam. We started with the oldest material where I asked her some questions on the topic. We also did some practice questions to make sure she understood the concepts and was able to answer the questions correctly."
"Both students and I studied for their Unit 1 test. The test covered scientific notation/significant figures, vocabulary words, and a few beginning chemistry concepts. We first went over their object sheet and through any questions they had. Then, we played a game where I would ask them a question and they would have to write the answer on a piece of paper. This seemed to work well; I could see if the girls really understood the concepts."
"Computational Methods and Ideal Gas Law. The student is very sharp and has a good intuition for chemistry and math. However, her work can be a little difficult to follow at times because she seems to be connecting most of the dots in her head. This may also stem from the fact that she's learned this material before and is very comfortable with this stage of chemistry. Ultimately most of the session was focused around helping her with some graphing problems using the computer. This went well and the only reason there was a struggle was because she and I were both inexperienced using the software she was instructed to use. All in all the session was successful. In future sessions, I will try to get the student to be more explicit and show more of her thoughts on the page."
