Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we went over the next section over her notes, reviewing each slide. We discussed protein transport last time, so we went over protein sorting this time (how the protein moves within the cell and out of/into the cell). Student understands the basic concepts, but needs a little clarification and help with the nomenclature. We will continue talking about proteins next session."
"We covered topic 9, which included oxidation and reduction. Specifically, we covered redox equations, reactivity and voltaic cells. We also went over practice questions from topic 7. Student is really starting to integrate all of the concepts together and I have seen great improvement and motivation!"
"Today we finished up DNA replication, transcription, and translation. We also went over the differences in these processes between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Then we went over evolutionary biology. We worked on practice problems for all these topics. Student has questions about gene regulation that we will cover in our next session. I'm going to send him links to study this topic. I also want him to study heredity, plant biology, and the differences between eukarya, bacteria, and archaea before out next session. We will start our next session with a quick Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium question."
"Now that school has started, and there have been a few weeks since our last session, we spent this whole lesson doing review in order to prepare for the upcoming school year. I looked over the syllabus for the student's biology class, and in order to follow along with the concepts the class in teaching, next time we will likely go deeper into the topics that are introduced in class to enhance overall understanding."
"On Sunday, we began the Self-Study Guide provided for Weeks 3 and 4. Starting with a review of Mendelian genetics, we covered the topics from Chapter 4 and most of Chapter 6. The course instructor provided 2 extra worksheets with practice problems for these chapters, and the student completed both in our time together; I was impressed with her thorough understanding of pedigrees and Punnett squares. For homework, she will complete the study guide and textbook questions from Chapter 4 and 6 and at least preview the videos/animations required for Chapter 5. In our next meeting on Wednesday, we will finish these three chapters and aim to start the remaining half of the material for Weeks 3 and 4. Her next quiz is due this Sunday, so she will finish the study guide this week."
"Over the weekend, the student reviewed the remaining concepts and finished most of his assignments. Today we worked through several concepts related to the effects of climate change, including effects on human health, conservation, and species richness. Additionally, we worked through a historical example of wildlife management and carrying capacity. At present, he still needs to get through 6 exams, 1 assignment, and the smartwork for the class. Because he has progressed quickly, we met for a single session today. Tonight he will work on his exams, and tomorrow we will review the concepts essential to completing the smartwork assignments. Assuming he completes his exams, he should be finished with the course by Wednesday."
