Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had a great day today-- she has learned so much Latin in 1 week! We discussed infinitives and indirect statements, since they appeared in the reading quite a bit, but most of the session was dedicated to translation--she covered 20 lines of book 2. Wonderful work, especially her growing ease moving through the sentences."
"The student and I discussed the material he expects to encounter during his upcoming exam. We reviewed the format of several of his past quizzes to better deduce this information, in addition to the semester syllabus he had previously provided me via email. We then talked about his general comfortability with Latin so I could better assess our starting point. I had the student map out the first two declensions so that we could discuss the more fundamental rules of Latin, and then moved forward through the first three chapters of his semester syllabus. Prior to the session, I had made flashcards that cover the main lessons from each of these three chapters. Towards the end of this session, we used these flashcards for review of our session. We discussed several study strategies, as well as the material he should independently study before our next session together so that we may move through the remaining three chapters of his syllabus more quickly, and thus spend more time on memory exercises and cumulative review. He is very quick to understand new concepts and explanations regarding Latin. He does not struggle with comprehension, but rather with memorization (and with memorization because he goes only so far as studying the basics of each new lesson--noun endings, etc.--rather than the purposes and uses behind each new concept, which would allow him a firmer base from which to expand his knowledge). I would push for him to gain a more thorough understanding--and a more lasting memory--of each chapter before moving on (which would not be difficult for him). All in all, he is very sharp."
"We reviewed personal, relative, and reflexive pronouns. We also practiced a few sentences and looked over the exam review sheet. For next time, I will have some prepared sentences that will strengthen each grammar point, and function as review for the student's January exam."
