Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on her reading comprehension. She had to read passages and answer questions about the passage. She seemed to do well during this activity, with guidance. As she read the passage we would stop and talk about what it was about (to make sure she was comprehending what she was reading). This technique seemed to help her very well. She correctly answered most of the questions after the passage."
"Today we started by going over his repetitive reading assignment that I had him read each night. This was an amazing improvement, he was confident and was reading whole sentences. We are going to continue with this style of practice followed by a cold read at sessions. We went over his sight words again form the school and his practice showed him to recognize almost half of the ones he struggled with last time. We are going to do a flashcard style game to help boost those words. We then went over the closed vowel rule and used that to introduce the first set of worksheets. This one focused on -ck words. He will finish the remainder of the packets this week at home, and identify closed vowel words in his own books. We will likely be starting 2 sessions a week to help keep up the practice. I am looking forward to hearing the teacher's evaluation next time as well."
"In the session the student's reading skills, and vowel knowledge were accessed. The student seems to know certain words. He also is having a problem with c, ch, and ck. The student told me what he enjoys about reading and what he dislikes about reading. He has a good attitude and wants to learn. The student was given a few words to spell and the words he missed he will study and we will review at the next session. I looked over some work the student did at school and he was able to go through each sentence of a reading passages and example what he got wrong within the question."
"This week, we began our grammar work. We spent the entire session working on parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs (linking, helping, and action,), and adverbs. On Thursday, we will continue with prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. The student did a great job trying to understand some concepts she wasn't as familiar with and quickly picked up almost all of the material. During our exercises, she was generally able to identify her own mistakes, and any mistakes I pointed out, she understood and corrected beautifully. I gave her a worksheet and the beginning of a short test to work on between sessions, and on Thursday after we finish this parts of speech unit, I will assign her a longer essay to work on."
"This week, we completed unit 1 of the Religions of the World. The student wrote his discussion and two responses on his own, and we reviewed/edited them to answer the questions or respond to others' discussions and to form proper syntax where necessary. He read several chapters to write his two complete essays. We worked on pulling out the basics to make an outline to help us stay on track."
"Thursday's class was particularly lighthearted and enjoyable! The students finished their work. They both seem to truly enjoy reading and have shown marked improvement as a result."
