Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is reviewing for the SAT in school this week. We worked on her packet (mostly phonics and reading comprehension). I gave her some strategies for test-taking. We will be working on phonemic awareness/reading comprehension in our future sessions."
"Today we worked on reviewing rules for two syllable words to determine if the vowel sounds are short or long. A review will be needed of this next week as well. Today we practiced fluency skills by playing memory fluency practice. The student did well with his accuracy and with repeated readings of his sentences, his fluency increased. For the first time, we applied skills to read a low readability high interest story."
"The student did well in her session last night. Her math homework was much shorter than usual and therefore we had more time to focus on reading and comprehension, vocabulary and writing. We read from Junie B. Jones, a book she had read before, but we were able to walk through it slowly and I asked very specific questions related to plot and characters. She did well answering them, especially when we looked at specific passages together. Finally, the student seemed to really enjoy the writing activity we did, in which I gave her a sentence with blanks and she would fill in words that would make sense. I look forward to working with her again."
"This was an initial session with the student. He is receiving support for executive functioning and writing. His reading comprehension seems decent. We outlined a plan to initiate a high interest reading book. He selected one from choices given. At our next session, we will work on reading comprehension, text setup, main ideas, and text connections. I left him with a journaling prompt to work on daily. One assignment is an in-depth observation of a living thing."
"This was an introductory session with the student for reading/writing. I thought the session was very successful. I believe we developed a mutual rapport with one another immediately. We also covered some initial assessments including fluency, comprehension, and spelling inventories. He had a positive and friendly attitude and completed all requested tasks. His reading showed accuracy and good comprehension skills. Fluency while reading new passages will continue to be assessed further in future sessions. Overall, he is a pleasure to work with, and I look forward to our next session."
"This was mainly a get-to-know-each other session. We went over what the student has been working on and what resources she's been using. I got a better sense of where she's at and what she needs from me. We practiced a few words in her Phonics book and read a short story. Next session, we're going to focus on vowel sounds because they seem to be holding her back more than anything else. "His" was the difficult word of the day, but by the end of the session, she could read it with only slight hesitation. Overall, it was a great session, and she is very motivated."
