Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did well in this session. We completed her math, reading and vocabulary assignments and she remained focused throughout. I have noticed an improvement in her willingness to read for longer periods of time and also an increase in her curiosity about the stories we read. She responds well to activities like us taking turns reading, analyzing illustrations and more personal comprehension questions. I look forward to working with the student again this week."
"We worked on a reading comprehension sheet with matching sight words. The student did well with this activity. We then finished the book we had been reading. He then answered questions about the book and wrote a summary over what he read. He did really well with this activity."
"We worked on prefixes and suffixes. We focused on how they affect the meaning of a word. We worked specifically on these prefixes - "re" "pre" "un" and "dis." The suffixes that we studied were "er" and "est.""
"This session's focus was divided between two activities, the first of which involved a writing exercise, and the second of which involved working through a series of exercises sampled from the English section of the ACT. The latter activity, which entailed correcting sentence errors in short reading passages, was selected despite its relatively advanced subject matter for its usefulness in accustoming the student to identifying errors when writing essays and stories of her own. After successfully completing a few of the questions, she quickly gained confidence in her abilities. Of the sections completed, she correctly identified more than 80% of the errors on a regular basis. When undertaking the writing exercise afterwards, several of the errors encountered in completing the questions were recognized and corrected in the process of writing, reinforcing and making concrete the concepts learned."
"This was my first session with this student. He is reading two summer books, Of Mice and Men, which he finished, and The Book Thief, which he is still reading. He has to write a blog for each book. We worked on Of Mice and Men today and drafted a blog post that he will complete, and we will later proof together. He also read several pages of The Book Thief. We started talking about reading and comprehension skills that we will continue to develop."
"This was my first session with this student. I spent some time talking with her, discussing goals, and informally assessing her English. I worked with her mainly on reading comprehension and a little bit on grammar. The priorities for future sessions will be grammar and reading comprehension."
