Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session we covered the entire SAT, though still focusing more on Verbal and also Writing. The student has been learning to read questions more carefully and learn to go back to the text to justify every answer he gives, or at least justify every answer he eliminates before he guesses. His vocabulary needs work, and while his math is better, it can still improve. He can do basic algebra, but geometry gives him trouble, so we reviewed some rules and practiced problems."
"This was our last session together. Since the student was feeling pretty strong on the other areas, we spent the session going through math practice problems and discussing strategies."
"We practiced the "scan / skim" strategy for two short reading passages. Also, we practiced vocabulary. The student mentioned he is working on 30 words per week. I suggested after he finishes a test section, he highlight the words he doesn't know and then look them up - this will help him remember them. He did well using the strategy but still needs to focus on learning new vocabulary words. We also did a math section together. He is doing well at pulling out relevant information from lengthy word problems. We finished with a grammar section. The student knows the rules for standard grammar and is continuing to work on discerning what "sounds right." I went over some suggestions for improving grammar and vocabulary, namely reading a few articles a week from the New York Times (mostly to pick up on those "$5 words" and to get a better understanding of English grammar)."
