"We reviewed reactions of alkenes: Sn1/Sn2, E1/E2, hydroboration, hydrogenation, epoxidation, and ozonolysis. We looked at small synthesis problems and reviewed mechanisms. The student was having difficulty with the chair conformation of cyclohexane, but she was very open and receptive to the material. We spoke about what to keep an eye out for in the above reactions."
"We went through the past exam, how to compare the rate of reaction in E2 and Sn1/E1 reactions, reviewed E2, and talked about tips on drawing the Newman projections. We also reviewed oxidation with PCC vs. Chromium/Jones reagents, keto-enol-diol equilibrium, and why Jones oxidizes primary alcohols all the way to carboxylic acids. Finally, we went over reacting alcohols and ethers with acid."
"We worked on editing the student's lab report, which was determining the stereoselectivity of two different reagents for forming vicinal diols."
"Good news is that she did well on her test by getting an 89, which is a solid improvement from a 73. So for today we went over esters and carboxylic acids, their nomenclature and reactions. No problems there, but she could just use a little practice with ester nomenclature, as well as familiarize with some basic reaction mechanisms."
"In the first session, the student and I covered acetal and ketal formations. We went through the mechanism for the hydrolysis of acetal and predicting the correct product. In the second session, we discussed aldol condensation and the formation of enolate. Different examples were given to highlight the reaction mechanism. The mechanism for imine formation was elaborated and discussed. We also covered Gilman reagent and the addition of organolithium reagents to alpha-beta unsubstituted ketone."
"In this session, we covered factors that help to affect acidity and basicity of specific molecules. We worked together to assess which nitrogen is more basic in guanidine, and then worked on a couple of practice problems from the book. The student is struggling most with understanding factors that assess basicity, but she learned factors such as resonance contributing forms to conjugate acids can help to assess basicity. Extra practice includes keeping up to date with reading and online homework. It was a pleasure to meet the student, and I am looking forward to our next session."
