Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I covered the first half of lesson 4 today, which had vocabulary and dialogue about school and studies. She did a great job at pronouncing characters using the correct tones today! As always, she did well on translating the Chinese dialogue into English as well as forming her own sentences in Chinese. She also did a great job at the quiz at the beginning on the session on the characters from lesson 3."
"It was my first session with the student. She is a shy and quiet girl, who's been learning Chinese since she was 2. She 's dealing with some very advanced level of Chinese for kids at the moment. She's good at visualizing the characters. Her pronunciation of Chinese is also very good. What she needs to work on, apparently, is to practice using the language more and also keep what she learned. She has materials and homework from school, so my main job is helping her not only on finish the homework but also better grasp the material and become more fluent. We practiced a lot on writing and saying those words over and over again. I use tricks to keep her engaged. I want her not only to become better at doing the homework but also enjoy what she's doing. We'll meet two or three times a week from now on."
"The student had completed his dictation practice before my arrival today. I went over a few suggestions with him on how to improve his dictation. He then took a quick quiz on vocabulary terms. Afterwards we moved on to the homework where he had to translate and draw sentences. We also went over the other vocabulary terms in the same chapter. We read some of the examples; he also came up with his own sentences using the terms from the chapter. We ended the session by re-quizzing the dictations that were given to the student."
"We reviewed and practiced with time and numbers. We worked with vocabulary to discuss places and to give instructions to workers. We finished the session by discussing goals for the next few sessions."
"We reviewed body parts in English and Spanish and did worksheets to make concepts concrete. We also reviewed time and how to say the time in Spanish. I do the same concept with both students but give them different worksheets due to their age difference. One student gets a fill in sheet on how to write time and the other matches the time to the numbers. We also sang a song and read it in English so they understood what was being said. I started reviewing grammar articles with the older student, for the next lesson she will be reviewing "to be" and more grammar things. The younger student will move on to shapes and seasons."
"We reviewed Ch 1a and 1B in the student's book and answered all of his questions. I also showed him two websites for practicing vocabulary and two sites for conjugation practice."
