"I was so impressed with the work that this student did today. We started off with some more area and perimeter work, moving on to finding the length of unknown sides and finding area through multiplying length times width. The new way of finding area was sort of familiar to her, but I had to break it down before she really understood, after which she blazed through a practice worksheet. We also did some more mental addition practice, where she had a real breakthrough. We discovered that the biggest issue for her was keeping all of the numbers straight in her head, so the easiest was to break the numbers apart by their place values, which made the numbers much easier to remember. After she discovered this, she was able to add big two-digit numbers in her head much more quickly."
"Today we continued our work on graphs. First, we made a list of all the possible different types of graphs we could come up with. I had them copy down the list and we drew a picture of what each graph looked like. Next, we briefly discussed how each type of graph works. Then, we started going over mean, median and mode, since they are important to know for certain types of graphs. At the end, they completed a review worksheet on graphs. I left them with 2 worksheets for homework."
"During Friday's session the student completed the extra work in her test review packet. This involved area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms as well as addition with fractions (like denominators). She did well with finding the perimeter and area with a little guidance but still needs to memorize the formulas for area of a triangle and rectangle. We created some flashcards to help her memorize which should help!"
