Class Description
In this course, 3rd through 5th graders in Special Education programs will learn and practice functional math skills related to measurements, money, and time. These skills are critical for learners’ day-to-day lives, and provide opportunities for practical application of fundamental math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Students should come prepared for class with a simple calculator along with paper and pencil to work through math exercises, as well as functional items for measurement and calculation. Suggested items include a ruler, tape measure, liquid measuring cups, dry measuring cups, and physical money such as coins and $1 and $5 bills.
The course can be taken multiple times to both reinforce skills and allow the repetition required to master skills and meet IEP goals.
Over the six-session course, students will learn and practice:
-
Session 1: Measuring length and width along with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing those measurements
-
Session 2: Measuring wet and dry ingredients along with doubling or dividing those measurements
-
Sessions 3-4: Counting money including calculating how much change should be returned from a purchase
-
Sessions 5-6: Calculating time including understanding units of time and adding or subtracting to estimate time
