Overview

This series is designed for 4th grade students who may benefit from the added challenge of accelerated instruction of Common Core 4th grade and 5th grade math skills that will form the essential foundation for success in the next grade and beyond. During the first semester, students will learn their current year’s math skills at an accelerated pace; during the second semester they will review the accelerated math curriculum and begin tackling next year’s math concepts. New math concepts are introduced on a monthly basis during each semester.

First Semester - Accelerated 4th Grade Math

The fall semester will emphasize fluency and deep understanding of the 4th grade math skills that will form the essential foundation for success in 5th grade math and beyond. Classes will focus on factors, multiples, and numerical patterns as a gateway to algebraic thinking; on adding, subtracting, and finding equivalence of fractions; and on measuring and classifying shapes based on lines and angles. All of these skills will continue to be built upon in 5th grade into middle school; this class will ensure that students are building atop firm understanding.

October

This month, students will deconstruct and reconstruct fractions as they build a deep understanding of partial numbers and of fractions as a form of division. They will practice adding and subtracting common-denominator fractions as they build fluency with fraction calculations, and they will use fractions as a method to represent and solve word problems.

November

Accelerated 4th Grade Math: Factors, Multiples, & Numerical Patterns

This month, students will develop a key component of algebraic thinking as they interpret patterns in numerical relationships and see the concept of multiples as a pattern on the number line. They’ll also work on factor pairs and deconstructing composite numbers as they build a foundation toward the numerical fluency necessary for algebraic factoring and the simplification of equations and expressions.

December

This month, students will work on identifying properties of lines and angles, such as parallel lines and right angles, and using those properties to classify shapes. These skills form the foundation for a leap in geometric ability in 5th grade into middle school as students calculate areas and volumes and work with shapes, lines, and angles on the coordinate plane.

January

Coming off a holiday break, students will spend this month reviewing and sharpening the most important skills in 4th grade math: fluency with fractions; factors, multiples, and numerical pattern thinking; and line, angle, and shape categorization. This will set them up for success in their scholastic second semester, plus lay the foundation for the advanced preview of 5th grade math to come during the next few months of Afterschool Advantage classes.

Second Semester - 5th Grade Math Preview

The winter/spring semester will give students a preview of the most important skills they’ll encounter in 5th grade, while solidifying their comfort and fluency with the 4th grade skills that future grades will build upon. Students will focus on identifying the logic behind numerical patterns and building equations to represent it; multiplying and dividing fractions; understanding and working with place values for integers and decimals; and plotting and interpreting points on the coordinate plane.

February

5th Grade Math Preview: Interpreting and Representing Patterns

This month, students will build upon their ability to recognize patterns in numbers by writing equations to represent that pattern and by filling in missing values in a pattern sequence. These skills form a crucial underpinning of algebra—creating equations to explain a situation and solving for unknown values—and will prepare students for success in 5th grade into middle school.

March

5th Grade Math Preview: Place Values

This month, students will explore the base-ten system, learning to name and understand integer and decimal place values, and practicing the representation of decimal place values as both fractions and decimals. This extends to explaining the number of zeroes or position of the decimal point while multiplying or dividing by 10, and to comparing decimals with varying decimal places.

April

5th Grade Math Preview: Fraction Calculations

This month, students will focus on multiplying and dividing fractions as they round out their fraction calculation toolkit and prepare for finding common denominators and working with mixed numbers. They’ll learn how to perform these calculations as well as how to visually represent them as they build a deep understanding of how fractions work and what they tell us.

May

5th Grade Math Preview: Coordinate Geometry

This month, students will get familiar with the coordinate system as they learn to plot and recognize points on the coordinate plane. They’ll then practice solving real-world problems via coordinate geometry as they see how this new tool can be useful in a variety of situations.
