VT After School Advantage Math for 3rd Graders

Grade 3

This series is designed for 3rd-grade students who may benefit from the added challenge of accelerated instruction of Common Core 3rd grade and 4th-grade math skills that will form the essential foundation for success in the next grade and beyond. During the first semester, students will learn their current year’s math skills at an accelerated pace; during the second semester, they will review the accelerated math curriculum and begin tackling next year’s math concepts. New math concepts are introduced on a monthly basis during each semester.

  • First Semester - Accelerated 3rd Grade Math

The fall semester will emphasize fluency and deep understanding of the 3rd-grade math skills that will form the essential foundation for success in 4th-grade math and beyond. Classes will focus on comfortably performing and interpreting multiplication and division calculations; understanding and calculating with fractions, and on “shape sense”—classifying shapes by their attributes and understanding the fundamentals of perimeter and area. All of these skills are important foundations of upper-elementary math skills as students progress to algebraic thinking, calculating with fractions and decimals, and working with shapes to solve real-world problems.

October: Accelerated 3rd Grade Math - Multiplication & Division Fluency

This month, students will practice calculating and interpreting one- and two-digit multiplication and division problems to build deep fluency with the process and reasoning behind these two critical operations. They’ll progress toward foundational algebraic thinking as they learn to investigate these operations with various elements as the unknown value, deepening their understanding and preparing them for algebra.

November: Accelerated 3rd Grade Math - Fraction Fluency

This month, students will explore the concept of fractions, learning how items can be divided into parts and how the fraction format represents that mathematically. They’ll see fractions visually in shapes and on the number line, practice representing fractional relationships with numerators and denominators, and build a foundation for fractional calculation and equivalence in months to come.

December: Accelerated 3rd Grade Math - Shape Sense

This month, students will explore fundamental shapes as they build a basis for geometric thinking. They’ll learn to identify and classify the features of shapes, and even understand that shapes fit into larger and smaller categories (e.g. rectangles and rhombuses are both quadrilaterals). They’ll also work to understand and identify perimeters and areas as tools to learn more about shapes in real-world situations.

January: Accelerated 3rd Grade Math Review

Coming off a holiday break, students will spend this month reviewing and sharpening the most important skills in 3rd-grade math: fluency with multiplication, division, and fractions, and the ability to classify and measure shapes. This will set them up for success in their scholastic second semester, plus lay the foundation for the advanced preview of 4th-grade math to come during the next few months of Afterschool Advantage classes.

  • Second Semester: 4th Grade Math Preview

The winter/spring semester will give students a preview of the most important skills they’ll encounter in 4th-grade while solidifying their comfort and fluency with the 3rd-grade skills that future grades will build upon. Students will focus on calculations with fractions; identifying patterns in numerical sequences; understanding and identifying factors and multiples; and recognizing line and angle properties in geometric shapes and figures.

February: 4th Grade Math Preview - Fractions

This month, students will deconstruct and reconstruct fractions as they build a deep understanding of partial numbers and of fractions as a form of division. They will practice adding and subtracting common denominator fractions as they build fluency with fraction calculations, and they will use fractions as a method to represent and solve word problems.

March: 4th Grade Math Preview - Numerical Patterns

This month, students will develop a key component of algebraic thinking as they identify and interpret patterns in numerical sequences. They’ll recognize patterns, explain them conceptually, and learn to represent them mathematically, and predict missing values as they begin to progress toward creating equations and solving for unknowns.

April: 4th Grade Math Preview - Factors & Multiples

This month, students will explore the world of factors and multiples as they begin to see numbers as products of their factors. They’ll work on factor pairs and deconstructing composite numbers, and as part of that exploration, they’ll identify the concept of prime numbers. And they’ll learn to see multiples on the number line as patterns in multiplication, building a level of divisibility fluency that will form a solid foundation for work with fractions, algebra, and more.

May: 4th Grade Math Preview - Line & Angle Properties

This month, students will work on identifying properties of lines and angles, including parallel lines and right angles, and performing measurements and visual inspections to recognize those attributes in figures and shapes. They’ll also progress toward using those properties to classify shapes and determine necessary characteristics of common shapes.
