Migrate, Hibernate, or Tolerate: How Animals Handle Winter

Phil Torres

photographer, biologist, and host of Expedition X on Discovery Channel

About Phil Torres

The host of animal and exploration shows on the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, Phil has been bitten by an anaconda, tackled a tiger shark, and gotten lost in a forest of quicksand...all in the name of science. His love of nature and adventure has taken him to the Arctic Circle, the Amazon rainforest, and many exotic locations in between.

About the class

Some change coats, and others change colors. Some stop doing anything but breathing; others fly thousands of miles. And some frogs just freeze into bricks of ice until they melt in the spring. But whether they migrate, hibernate, or make changes to tough it out, nearly every animal has a plan for getting through another cold, dark winter. So what better way to start December than by joining TV biologist Phil Torres to explore the incredible ways that animals prepare for winter. You’ll learn which animals fly to warmer climates (and some fascinating reasons why), which animals change color to better camouflage in the show, and which animals switch to breathing out of their backsides, plus much, much more. Grab some blankets and hot cocoa (yes, humans have our own adaptations) and get ready to explore this wildlife winter wonderland.
