Special Education Reading Fluency Level 3 - Group B

grades 3-6

This class is intended for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) with goals targeted at improving reading fluency. Research shows that reading practice and repetition is a key strategy for improving reading fluency. Students will have the opportunity to read and re-read the same level appropriate text and then practice reading orally with an opportunity to receive corrections.

Level 3 is a group of students who are currently reading at a 3rd grade level so they can work together towards similar goals. It is an opportunity for students to be with peers so these students can work together and feel less isolated in their reading struggles. This class can be repeated until the IEP goals are met.

To determine the right group for your student, have your student read any 3rd grade level text passage for the first time (a cold read) for 1 minute. As they read, track the missed words. After a minute, count the Words Correct Per Minute and choose group A, B or C based on the WCPM ranges below (and the current school quarter of Fall, Winter or Spring).
