AfterSchool Weather Wonders Club (Grades 4-5)
The forecast for this club is 100 percent awesome! (Sorry, we had to say it.) Your aspiring meteorologist will join new “fairweather friends'' to explore the world of weather, complete hands-on projects, and learn from expert instructors. Each month, they’ll focus on a different meteorological theme, breaking down what makes these natural events occur, what it feels like to be part of them, and how people can predict and prepare for them.
Theme Of The Month:
December: Forecast Factors — How do meteorologists predict the future, telling us what weather to expect even weeks in advance with incredible accuracy? This month students will find out as they explore the science of weather prediction and learn to forecast the future for themselves.
January: Winter Weather — Oh the weather outside is frightful...and to a meteorologist that’s delightful! Few things are more fascinating than frozen storms and this month students will get to know blizzards, avalanches, ice storms, and the polar vortex.
February: The World’s Wildest Weather — Weather is one of the best ways to see the raw power of nature, and this month students will explore just how powerful nature can be. They’ll learn about the biggest, fastest, hottest, and coldest storms in world history, and see why certain places are so often home to nature’s wildest events.
March: Weather Geography — Why is the desert of the southwest so dry while the southeast is so humid? How can it almost never rain in Southern California, but you can see snow-capped mountains from the beach? This month, students will explore the factors that create local climates and give each region its unique weather flavor.
April: Tornadoes & Other Wind Events — How many adventures will students have this month? The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind...literally. This month they’ll explore the wildest windstorms in the world, including tornadoes, dust storms, derechos, and more.
May: Summer Weather — While summer can be perfect for relaxing beach weather, it also ushers in lots of extremes: heat waves, hurricanes, thunderstorms, wildfires, and more. This month students will explore how summer time heats up the intensity of weather.
