Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During our session today, the student and I practiced more math problems. Specifically, we solved multiple word problems, which included writing 3 digit numbers. Overall, the student demonstrated good understanding of the topics reviewed and is vastly improving in all areas. Additionally, he is becoming more focused during each session and is improving his efficiency in solving computational and word problems. In our next session, we will continue to build on the topics learned today."
"During the session, we reviewed multiplication. I taught the student some songs and rhymes that will help him when skip counting to find a product. We learned the 4s, 6s, 7s, and 8s. He really liked the songs, especially the song for the 4s. At the end of the session, he had almost mastered his 4s, but we still need to work on his other multiplication facts."
"During this session, the student and I covered short & long division and simple multiplication. I continued to encourage him to commit his smaller multiples to memory & we worked on different strategies to help accomplish this. He is having a difficult time recognizing how the numbers he is dividing/multiplying in a given equation are related to each other. Repetition should make a difference."
"During this session, the student and I reviewed concepts that we covered in our beginning sessions to ensure that she had retained this knowledge. We practiced identifying place value, finding the true value of a digit, and writing numbers in expanded form. The student showed that she retained all of the knowledge that she had gained during the first few sessions. Then we practiced addition of 4 digit numbers with regrouping. She needed more prompting for this skill, but quickly remembered the strategies that we used. Finally, she and I practiced using different coins to count to a given dollar amount. She struggled with this concept, but because she has consistently shown that she comprehends this skill I suspect that she was becoming tired toward the end of our session. Overall, she did a great job and showed that she has retained many of the skills that we have covered."
"During this session, we practiced reading comprehension. We read through a passage, and I asked the student to give a summary of the passage. I also asked him two questions about the passage and had him identify phrases that support his answers. With a little bit of effort he was able to sound out the words independently. My recommendation is that the parents encourage him to challenge himself and reward him when he succeeds at overcoming a challenge."
"During this session, we worked on division and double-digit multiplication. I had the student answer a variety of division questions that ranged from simple (8/2) to slightly more complex (48/3). Since she is new to division, she struggled with the more complex problems, but did fairly well with the simple ones. She also excelled at multiplying a single-digit number with a double-digit number, rarely needing assistance. Going forward, I would like to focus the most on the more complex long division problems, since she can't do those on her own yet. I would also like to continue reviewing the times tables as well as start working in double-digit x double-digit multiplication."
