Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Council Bluffs, NE Calculus tutoring
We covered consumer rights in health. Everything came pretty easy today for the student. There were some specifics of the reading that confused him, but that was it. He was positive and ready to work today. We looked in deeper at the confusing questions and I had to prod him to think deeper on the writing portion of his work, but for the most part things came pretty easily for him today. He was going to do a few more health assignments tonight. Right now our plan is to review a lot of health and hopefully be done with it by the end of the week. He got good grades, I think 100%, on the things we reviewed the last few days.

Today, we nearly completed the student's assignment on normal distribution. We discussed the meaning of the bell curve and symmetry and how to determine the mean and standard deviation from a graph and from data. Then we worked on finding the area under the curve using the normal distribution data tables. The student picked up the material very quickly!

The student and I talked about stem and leaf plots, histograms, circle graphs, relative frequency tables, quartiles, and possible outliers. There was a lot of information discussed and used today, and she did a fine job keeping up with the info and being able to use it.

The student has an upcoming algebra 2 final, so we went over some of the problems she had been assigned as review and worked those together. Largely we worked with rational expressions: simplifying, graphing, solving, inequalities, etc. In doing so, we reviewed vertical asymptotes, horizontal asymptotes, and "holes" as far as graphing; identifying zeros and charting out the combination of negatives/positives to determine the sign of the overall result, for inequalities set to 0; and finding like denominators and converting all terms to that denominator for simplifying. It was a very full session, and I'm glad the student feels better about this material now!

Great session! We started off with reading. We practiced fluency, vocabulary, context clues, and comprehension with a passage from Little Women. The student did well and I'll have to find something more challenging for next time. We moved on to some math, drilling basic algebra with decimals, "sums", and word problems using multiplication and addition. We then finished off with spelling and vocabulary drills. Spelling was our weak spot during this session. The student can easily answer questions correctly where he has to identify which word in a list is spelled correctly but when I ask him to properly spell the other words, we struggle. With more reading practice, fluency, and writing practice, this will improve gradually. Lots of reading and ELA practice on the horizon.

The student and I worked on recursive sequences and iteration functions. The student struggled with applying the steps and equations to the particular problems. We also worked on expanding binomials. The student did have a great attitude. I gave him a lot of notes for him to prepare for the final, as well as practice problems. The student got a 65% on one quiz and 100% on another quiz. His grade for the semester before taking the final is an A.
