Council Bluffs, NE Algebra tutoring
The student wanted to go over asymptotic equations and how to graph them. Again, she seemed to know and understand the concept, so I think she just wanted to practice with someone. I showed her how to use the asymptotes and be smart about plugging in numbers to get the general shape of the graphs. We worked on a number of these problems and then briefly covered the next section, which was not necessarily a new concept but needed practice and careful attention.

The student got in a rhythm, and he ended up being able to finish both quiz 8 and the scientific notation worksheet, both without much help. We think this might be all of his make-up work that he's supposed to do, but I will double check with his teacher to see what he needs to do tomorrow!

Today we did a comprehensive review for the final today. We covered all the sections his class covered this semester on rational expressions, logarithms, complex numbers, volume and perimeter, and trigonometry. Since we only focused on the first two levels today due to the structure of the exam, the student was pretty good with the newer stuff, and needed some reminders for the older material. I have suggested he thoroughly review the packet tonight and inform me about any questions he may have before the test. Since we had to cover so much material today, I was not able to drill any specific concepts in more depth; however, it is highly recommended he reviews systems of equations and finding surface area of prisms.

The student and I worked through his new review packet for his Algebra final coming up this Monday. The problems were designed to be especially challenging, and he was pushed to really wrap his head around complex, multi-step factoring and exponents problems. His work was very good overall, and I'd like to see him do better with exponents, especially negative exponents. After a refresher on how to do exponents correctly the student picked up the pace quite nicely. We ran through a number of graphing and word problems, saw some problems that had him work backwards from the work he normally has to do (especially rate problems), and distinguished between slope-intercept form and standard form. While he still has some preparing to do this week, his work improved a lot tonight.

We worked on a semester test review that covered solving systems of equations/inequalities, percent, discounts, sales tax, exponential growth/decay, operations on monomials, scientific notation, Pythagorean Theorem, and graphing/solving quadratics. The student needed some help on this but overall she knew how to work most of the problems. I gave her a few hints to help her when she takes her semester test. We had a really good session!! Great job!! I have enjoyed working with you!!!

We reviewed through the student's biology packet, completing molecular genetics and evolution. She needs to brush up on these topics, and she should continue the packet by going through previous notes and reading from the textbook.
