Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over long division and techniques to minimize mistakes. He maintained a positive attitude throughout the session. My strategy today included formulating a step by step procedure to ensure the processes used to solve the problems were uniform and clear. We also practiced a few homework problems to ensure the information was relayed properly."
"We spent the session working on reading comprehension and context clues. We went through seven questions focusing on understanding a specific word given context clues. The student did better on them once he calmed down and concentrated on the problems. When he focuses, they do become easier. Finally, we worked on some read comprehension passages. I think he does well when someone works one-on-one with him on those problems. He seems to understand them when pushed to focus."
"We covered a chapter review on polynomials, simplifying radicals, inverse functions, composition functions, and graphing radical polynomials. The student seemed motivated to do some of the material reviewed. My strategies included step-by-step processes, visual aids, and similar problems to reinforce concepts learned previously. If he shows all his work and double checks it, he will do well on the test."
"We worked on finishing up the review for the student's final. We finished off integration with u-substitution problems then started doing random problems from throughout the chapters. We finished off with me giving the student a few practice exams to go over with answer keys so that she feels as comfortable as possible going into her exam."
"For test review, we studied: 1. Parent function; 2. Transformations; 3. Parent/Transformed tables; 4. Half-life; 5. Medicinal half-life; 6. Exponential functions; 7. Modeling exponential and half-life problems; 8. Imaginary numbers; 9. i^2=-1; 10. Conjugate multiplication; and 11. Extraneous solutions. The student is doing great! She has fixed many of her deficits and has made tremendous improvements so far. I wish her the best on her test!"
"The student and I had an enrichment session today. We worked on learning new skills and reviewing old ones, using online questions as a jumping-off point. We went over stem-leaf plots, bar graphs, comparing fractions, adding and subtracting decimals, the order of operations, and tricks for determining if numbers are divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10. She did a fantastic job with this review, going from feeling confused to feeling confident in her understanding of stem-leaf plots and more. The review of fractions, including terms like numerator and denominator, was also particularly welcome. She told me that she did a great job on her math review homework, only missing one question- which her teacher let her correct. She was all smiles, and it was great to see how much her confidence has increased!"
