Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

Corona, CA SAT Writing and Language tutoring
The student and I focused on polynomials and complex numbers today. She is now comfortable working with imaginary numbers and performing polynomial long division. She is good at evaluating problems once she understands them. We will talk a bit more about how to describe functions next week, but she did tremendous work today and is keeping an excellent pace. She should review what we went over today so that she doesn't forget and finish the worksheet I sent her as practice.

The student and I got started using the new prep books she had ordered. We developed a plan to divide up the 28 chapters of her math prep book and 18 chapters of her grammar prep book. We did chapters 1-4 of math and 1-3 of grammar together, and practiced a science reading passage. For next week, she will do the extra practice problems for the math and grammar we studied today, and practice a science passage on her own. Next week, we will review her homework and do chapters 5-8 of math, 4-6 of grammar, and a literature reading passage.

The student and I graded another SAT test together. She scored consistently on the Verbal section; her Writing & Language score was higher than last time; and her Reading score was lower. At our next session I would like to finish scoring the Math section and then look at the graph and two-part Reading questions in particular. (Graph questions on SAT Reading could be combined with ACT Science preparation.) I would also like to continue reviewing circles, arc lengths, and radians before moving on to her next practice SAT.

The student and I had a good lesson and we saw some progress. We began by reviewing the essay he had written. He has made the connection that the essay should be focused on the way in which the author persuades the readers. Now we need to shift focus from the content of what the author says to HOW the author convinces the audience. I have instructed him to create outlines from now on since his essays have good ideas but lack clarity in communicating those ideas. We spent the rest of the lesson on the English/Grammar sections. He is progressing nicely with his grammar accuracy. I pushed him today to explain choices as to why he would eliminate or keep an answer. We reviewed the mechanics of process of elimination and have found a better method for him. He is to complete the section we were working on and complete an additional essay.

The student and I had a good session. She did fairly well on math, missing fewer problems than she had in the past. She also seemed to perform better on the Reading section, missing 4 over the course of two passages. She seemed more confident and increasingly able to catch her mistakes. Her homework is to complete a test before our next session.
