Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I did an in-depth analysis of expectations and examples of the assessment essay. Because it differed slightly from strategies we used for the test, we discussed the similarities and differences of our approaches. We went through examples provided in his practice book of essays that scored from a 6-1 to see the difference in each scoring. He will write an essay for next week. We also had time to go into each individual section, focusing a lot on reading today. I gave him ideas on how to approach questions in the reading section. We went through the math and writing sections as well."
"We reviewed several sections of the practice exams. Scoring his practice tests, we saw a significant improvement."
"Went over critical reading practice sections; went over writing skills practice sections that the student had completed; went over a practice essay he had completed, and discussed strategies and general guidelines for the assessment Essay portion."
"The student and I focused on fraction problems in preparation for the SAT. She is clever, and likes to find ways to simplify a problem in her head. This is great when it works, but she sometimes misremembers or skips a step while solving a problem, which leaves her confused and frustrated when she can't get the right answer. She needs to practice taking these problems slowly and methodically. Once she has the right habits ingrained, she can start to look for faster ways to tackle a problem. She also needs to review the rules for multiplying sums of numbers together, as well as the rules for simplifying fractions. 95% of the trouble she had today involved misapplying these rules. We will continue to work on this next session."
"The student and I focused on his essay. We reviewed the available essay prompts and discussed the pros and cons of each essay prompt, then began drafting the essay for the topic he chose. He will be doing some more specific research on this topic between now and our next session, at which point we will continue editing for content and edit for clarity and grammar. We also reviewed his test scores from his previous attempt."
"The student and I focused on math problems involving the graphs of cubic functions, solving a system of equations if you're given one of its factors, and dividing polynomials. Then, we worked through missed questions in a writing practice test focusing on word-in-context problems and avoiding the use of incorrect homophones. I asked her to do math problems from the packets as well as another writing practice test for next time."
