Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We had our final session before the student had to take his exam. We did multiple questions from each of the subject areas of the GRE math section."
"We talked about the student's goals for the GRE, for these tutoring sessions, and for the graduate program for which she is applying. We spent a significant amount of time going over the format of the GRE - the different types of sections and questions - and finished by discussing some of the reading and writing that the student is doing to prepare for her test."
"We started with verbal/vocabulary questions (fill in the blanks with multiple blanks and fill in the blanks with synonyms), then we did a couple of reading questions, before finishing up with math (coordinate geometry, algebra, functions, integers/number theory). The student had a great attitude, as always. She has some practice tests to do. A big win from the session was the fact that the student got almost all of the verbal questions about synonyms correct! Out of all the material, she seemed to have the toughest time with coordinate geometry, but I think all she needs is a bit of review. She definitely improved a lot, even with just the small amount of review we did during our session. We went over some math strategies, including factoring to simplify even when there are no variables and using extreme values (especially when comparing two quantities). I think she has definitely made progress. She got a lot of questions right tonight, plus she just seemed to be more comfortable than usual with the vocabulary and most of the math."
"We practiced some of the vocabulary questions on the test. She is still working on learning many of the words, but even so was able to use process of elimination to get to many of the correct answers. Before next time, she'll focus on going over more vocab words and practicing with flashcards. We also started to go over geometry. With a little review of a few formulas, she was quickly and accurately working through problems involving circles, triangles and the coordinate plane. Before next time, she'll go over more of the math concepts in the workbook to refresh herself. I think once she practices a few problems in each area, she will have no trouble with the math."
"We quickly reviewed vocabulary, then continued reviewing math problems from the student's practice test. We spent some time going over averages and did some review of geometry. The second half of the session was devoted to an issue essay he wrote. This was quite good, with clear organization and a clear point of view. The introduction was a little muddled, but could be largely fixed by simply shortening the sentences, and he wandered slightly away from the main topic briefly in one paragraph. We also talked about using a wider range of examples, since the range used in this essay, while acceptable, was somewhat narrow. For next session, he will work on vocabulary, write another essay, and take the verbal sections of a practice test."
"We reviewed a comprehensive set of questions that the student had worked on on her own -- and we used that as an opportunity to review concepts and strategy. She has made significant progress over the last several weeks and should keep up the good work!"
