Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued working on flash cards, cognitive tasking, and tackling content from class. We used the textbook to review/preview the contents of the first chapter by completing a pretest from the book. Afterwards, I introduced some skills related to mental math. The approach we used related mostly to multiplication and regrouping. For example, 12 x 8 was broken down as (10 x 8) + (2 x 8). This allowed him to use simpler math facts that he knew well to solve slightly more complicated ones. This also allows a student to see different path towards solving problems that appeared to only have one."
"I worked with the first student on her Algebra homework. She was working on factoring polynomials ax^2+bx+c where a>1. I taught her how to list a pair of factors for a and c in the equation and multiply them and add them to make b. Then I showed her how to separate these numbers into the sets of parentheses. She understood this very well and was doing it by herself by the third problem. I then worked with the second student on proofs and constructions. The constructions consisted of a kite and a parallelogram, and the proofs were proving parallelograms and one square. They all consisted of finding congruent triangles and then showing new sides are congruent because of it leading to it being a parallelogram or square. I then worked with the third student on turning words into algebraic expressions, finding algebraic expressions to represent tables, and working with PEMDAS with complicated expressions. She was very fast to pick up all of this but she was eager to keep doing more."
"The student and I worked through her math homework for the day and worked on measurement and conversion. We also did some practice with vocabulary words. We tried to prepare for her upcoming math test."
"We had a great session today! She showed me a timed addition worksheet that she did in school and only got one answer wrong on the whole worksheet! We practiced addition with a coloring worksheet and playing card games. She was enthusiastic about all of the things that we accomplished today. I will bring more timed worksheets next week, because she really enjoyed the one that she worked on at school. She is doing such a great job, and I am so excited to see her progress even more!"
"We continued on the section of the curriculum that reviewed subtraction with whole numbers and decimals. A number of the problems were 'word problems' and the student persevered in their completion, even though it was apparent to me that she was challenged by these problems. We finalized today's session by reviewing basic subtraction through re-grouping and graphing."
"Today we mainly focused on multiplication and applying them to word problems. For next week the student is to time himself as he fills out a multiplication chart."
