Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we worked on law of sine/cosine and bearings. We started by reviewing the different cases you should use law of sine or law of cosine. Once he understood the limitations of each law, we practiced some problems. He quickly started getting comfortable with these problems. We worked some of the more difficult law of sine/cosine word problems involving more than 1 triangle. The hardest part of these problems (as with most word problems) is taking the info from the question and creating an accurate model. Overall, he was doing fairly well with these problems. He needs some more practice and will contact me next week if he needs another session."
"Today we worked on catching him up in his math homework. The main focus of the homework was reviewing matrices. The first problem set asked for the product of two matrices. The next problem set focused on finding the determinate and the inverse of a matrix. The student initially had difficulty finding the determinate of a 33 matrix. After a couple problems he was able to complete them easily. He needs to be careful with signs."
"We spent the session working on practice math problems from the ACT, particularly on ratios and proportions. The student did well overall and knew how to do the majority of problems. However, many times he would pick a longer way to solve a problem rather than seeing a much faster shortcut. I tried to help him see some of the shortcuts to look out for and explained how even saving a few seconds per problem adds up over the course of a sixty-question test. I left him with a practice test to work on over the coming week that we will look through during our next session."
"The student had an exam this week, so we reviewed material for the exam during this session. We focused mostly on the average rate of change, spontaneous rate of change, and applications of using the derivative. During this review session, she was able to understand the problems much quicker than during the initial sessions so I think she knew the material very well, and just needed a refresher. She was prepared with questions that she had trouble on and wanted to focus on. We covered most of the sections for the exam, and her professor had a review session the following day so she would be able to get help on anything we did not cover."
"The student and I covered logs and exponents. I reviewed simplification of perfect exponential numbers and negative exponents. We introduced lawns and their relationship to exponents. We did several problems finding integer, exact, and decimal answers. He is doing quite well."
"We reviewed for the upcoming test the student has after break. The material consisted of factoring, solving inequalities and graphing."
