Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I worked with the student on the last set of SAT practice questions. We will begin to work on topics that are unfamiliar to him on Thursday. He also practiced identifying sets in the set activity as well as multiplication facts in the 6 and 7 times tables. The next session will be on Thursday at 7pm."
"We reviewed chapter 7 from the student's Human Geography book, focusing on the diffusion of various religions and vocabulary terms. We also discussed how religion plays a role in shaping the demography of certain areas."
"Today we worked on preparation for a test the student has next week. The material covered solving questions using different trig identities. I feel that after today's practice she should be well set to pass her test come Monday and Tuesday. She understands the material and has the identities memorized."
"Worked primarily on translation today, going over again the Caesar material from the beginning of the semester. As usual, I quizzed him on recognizing grammatical constructions as we encountered them, such as the gerundive, gerund, and ablative absolute. He is usually better at identifying them than at following up to correctly translate them."
"Saturday at 11:00am - 12:45pm. Reviewed material for the upcoming cumulative exam next week. Generated questions in areas that need improvement. Looked over the review guide that was administered for the exam. Set time for the following week and also looked over previous exams/quizzes."
"Started to work with the student on American history. We discussed the reasons for European expansion, the founding of Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts. We also did some comparison with England versus other colonial powers. Then we discussed the rise of the slave trade and why it was so important to colonization. I want to get her through the 1st 13 colonies and into the revolutionary war next week. I also want to start working with her a little on her writing, at least to make sure that she is on grade level for it."
"The student and I reviewed his French homework. We talked about grammar and sentence construction. We realized that mostly where he's losing points on tests are small mistakes. I recommended that he download a podcast and listen to it to reinforce what he's learning in class."
"We dove deeply into the reading passages part of the CR exam. The student had a breakthrough after a lot of practice and better understands how to tackle these problems. We are focusing on process of elimination and figuring out which questions to skip. His previous homework was to do the critical reading sections of practice test 1. Knowing which questions to skip is going to be one of his big strategies to focus on. Homework this time will be the Critical Reading sections of Practice Test 2. Also, the student will finish the sentence completion problems we were working on when our time was up."
"The topics covered in the problem sets for this session included, setting up trigonometric equations, even and odd trigonometric functions, and probability. He was able to solve the questions that involved new material (even/odd functions and probability), with only minor assistance on my part. About half the session was spent reviewing algebra; factoring certain forms of polynomials, and simplifying complex fractions. We corrected some of the minor errors he had, and practiced a number of problems from the material I brought."
"Today we covered aspects of writing an essay for the exam, from expectations of formatting to how the students are accepted into a school based on their performance. We went through a writing scenario that presented the informational packet about the test. I asked the students to work on doing mathematical operations on fractions for our next session."
"I'm beginning to review the lessons we've covered with the student. In the first session, we played a game reviewing tones, and I also reviewed greetings with him. I made sure he took notes on any new material."
"Today, the student and I covered a couple of "Writing Tests" in the SAT book. It was very clear that he had really improved greatly since we began four months ago. The next time we meet we will focus exclusively on the SAT Essay."
