We continued covering electrochemistry this week. However, we started with going over the student's recent quiz on thermodynamics. We successfully worked out problems that she got wrong and were able to also learn tricks and techniques to avoid making the same mistakes in the future. Additionally, we went over questions that she got right but still didn't quite understand (it was a multiple-choice quiz). We were also able to comb through some of the lecture material on electrochemistry that went too fast in the actual lecture.

We covered balanced equations. The number of reactants made it difficult to do half reactions, so we solved it iteratively. The student was just having a problem with this one question. The strategy was to balance the most complicated atom (Fe) since it was both in the +2 and +3 oxidation states. We then adjusted the coefficients for the other reactants as needed.

We went over the additional study problems, talking about the effects of different shocks on the IS LM FX graphs, including when there is a fixed exchange rate regime or a float. What happens with a foreign interest rate and exchange rate causes the mirror image to happen in the home country, unless the central bank is reacting along the way to defend the peg. For the exchange rate, think in terms of how much home currency it takes to buy foreign currency or goods, and is this going up or down. We talked briefly about bank balance sheets, defining assets and liabilities, and thinking about what the central bank would do if commercial banks became insolvent (had fewer assets than liabilities). Hopefully this helps you to understand PS4, which asks about how foreign exchange is related to the central bank's balance sheet.

The student and I worked exclusively on an essay for his religion class. He had no homework in either Geometry or History. He wrote a strong essay and needed only minor guidance as well as some grammatical help. I created an outline with the student as he talked through the material he remembered coupled with what he found in his book. We worked on using this outline to ensure we used the material to prove his thesis. I left him with this outline; he had two paragraphs left to write but had already reached the word requirement and felt confident in the essay.

We worked on the power functions, how to deal with radicals, the interconversion of radicals and exponential notation, and how to simplify radical expressions. I then showed her the "x" method for factoring quadratic equations.
