Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on spelling and reading this session. We practiced his spelling words intermittently throughout the session, with fewer mistakes as we neared the end. He read a few books out loud to me, and we worked together on his literature packet."
"Student and I reviewed school work and completed some sight word worksheets. He has come a long way with his sight words!"
"For the first half of the session, the student and I revisited word families. She brainstormed words with the short vowel sound "e." Next, she wrote and read high frequency words on workbook pages. She also filled in the missing vowel to complete words. For the second half of the session, she read two stories from the book series I gave her. She was able to self correct as she read and really enjoyed the stories. We will continue to read short stories next week to build her fluency."
"The student showed me the homework he did last time on writing summaries about the remaining scenes in Act 1 of Hamlet. He did well, and he showed me the expressions and words he looked up to understand the language. Today we worked on Act 2, both of us reading the dialogue, and going paragraph by paragraph to analyze content and language. He is getting better at finding the keywords and seeing past the imagery. I gave him homework to read, analyze, and summarize the scenes in Act 3."
"The student started reading Ender's Game and looked specifically for literary cues to help understand setting, milieu and character development. We also talked about the limitation of children in Ender's Society in the future setting of the story. My goal today was to focus him on the content: I am sending him questions to help him retain what he is reading and make some predictions."
"The student started the session with a reading comprehension review. I want to get a grasp on her level of comprehension. The first passage was very easy for her and she was able to predict many of the answers in the pre -reading section. She answered seven multiple-choice questions after reading and did very well. Following this, she answered three essay responses and had correct answers, but we added some additional information and corrected some spelling errors. I gave the student a short 20-word spelling test to determine her level. I now have a base and a list of word patterns for her to work on."
