Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has been concerned with improving her critical reading score, and we finished a full critical reading test scenario as well as reviewed her scores and incorrect answers. She continues to strengthen her vocabulary through context clue exercises"
"The student worked on some math problems from the book, and we went over those together. I walked her through how to do those and recognize ones like them in the future. Overall, she's got the smarts, and I believe she will be able to stay present throughout the test."
"We reviewed passage-based reading strategies. I familiarized the student with an online learning platform so that she could do reading, writing, and math flashcards each day between our tutoring sessions and asked her to do 20 to 30 minutes a day of said flashcards for next time."
"Today the student and I reviewed vocabulary - once again, his commitment to practice is paying off! - and practiced using vocab in the context of two-blank sentence completion questions. We added to the degree of difficulty by introducing the element of time (seeing if he could answer correctly within about one minute), and this is an area that could use further practice. The student has strong intuitions about answering passage-based questions. We finished by practicing exponent/square root rules in math, which he excels at - just need to focus a bit on careful algebra. Homework: vocabulary practice, one math section, and one critical reading section."
"The student had taken a practice test, where she hadn't done as well as she could. Still, the test helped to make clearer the areas where she needs work--vocabulary, focus, basic rules of grammar but especially idiom and usage, and above all, more reading. She has the brains to do well."
"The student and I went over the math section of the SAT's. She did better on this math than the ACT."
"We spent half the time covering a diagnostic exam in the math section and the other half focusing on sentence completion. The student is particularly adept at visualizing the coordinate plane and was very successful on graphical questions. I will be leaving her with practice in number theory, and she will write an essay on an SAT prompt for the next session, which I will review with her."
"We began our session with reviews of their last essay. I discussed with each of them how to improve their scores to earn 5's or 6's. I needed to see more structure in their essays, elaboration on thoughts, and deeper examples. They then worked on a new prompt for 25 minutes. After that, they worked on a long critical reading section. When they finished I had them collaborate on answers as we reviewed each question. They then completed a 10 minute section, and we repeated the same process. At the end of the session, I was able to grade their essays and saw a dramatic increase immediately. We discussed how they could still improve their scores."
"We started off by going over some of the work that I had assigned her last week. She didn't make too many errors. The writing was vastly improved, so we focused on two problem areas. After some more reading paragraphs, I saw that her vocabulary wasn't as strong as it should be and recommended her to go through that section in her study book. The final third was spent with math, where I saw that she was having difficulties starting problems which was really limiting the math she could do. I helped her start some math problems, and assigned her to do more so that she could practice writing them out."
"The student and I met for a session of SAT tutoring. In this session we worked on geometry concepts for the test. We worked with triangles, volumes, and angles. The student seemed to understand most of these concepts pretty well; she got the easy and medium questions correct as well as a few of the hard ones. We also did a practice section on reading. Overall I would say she has a good deal of knowledge but needs to be practicing more frequently as she gets ready for the test."
"The student and I got off to a great start in our first session. I prepared a practice test from a preparation book and we went over the exam together, and discussed different test taking strategies and calculator tricks, as well as time management."
"We did 2 practice sections (section 3 and 6) from test #2 of the SAT practice book. I encouraged the student to use the plug-in strategies that I taught him last week and they helped him solve seemingly complex problems. I do see improvement in his problem solving skills as he is more familiar with the different strategies to use (combined with the strategies he learned from his group tutoring sessions). No concerns."
