Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"- We reviewed the textbook. - I left extra practice so that next time he will re-catch the basics that he had learned."
"We reviewed the Chinese phonetic alphabet. Then we learned some new sentences: I am hungry. I want ...to eat. I am thirsty. I want .... to drink. We used the food and drink we have learned before to practice these sentences. We also learned two new words, milk and water. After the session, the kids are able to make sentences like : I am hungry. I want hot dog for lunch. I am thirsty. I want milk to drink, etc. We had a great time."
"Today, I first introduced myself to the four students. I explained my tutoring experience and my goals for the sessions and asked what they would like to achieve out of our sessions. We first started with tones, and I showed them a good video on some of the tones, which included the first four and the fifth special one - the neutral tone. After that, we did Chinese character roots, and I explained what they mean and their relevance. We incorporated that into lesson 1, and I pointed them out in our vocabulary, for example: the human root (male), the female root, the speech root, and the root for small. We made index cards for them to practice the more important ones at home. Next, we went into the vocabulary for chapter 1, which included the basic greetings such as hello, goodbye, thank you, and you're welcome. We also made some practice sentences and practiced some dialogue. In the second hour, we practiced some more sentences and went into the chapter passage. The students were able to pick up the reading relatively quickly. Since they were just starting out, we focused more on speech and pronunciation than character recognitions, which we will do more when they build stronger basics in roots. Finally, I introduced them to a good website that includes a complete analysis of individual Chinese characters from roots to stroke order for writing. We practiced some writing and ended the lesson with each of them having a go at practicing with the site. Overall, they were really pleased with the lesson and were able to follow me really well. We will continue next week at the same time."
"We reviewed Dialogue 1 of Chapter 10 and previewed Dialogue 2. I clarified the grammar points that the student had questions about. We spent 20 minutes practicing for her speaking test. For the next class, I will prepare some dialogue practice questions to practice with her."
"We went over the previous test and identified skills that will make learning easier going forward. We also went over the vocab for the first part of the current chapter on hobbies."
"We went over tones. I introduced and briefly covered a broad range of different topics in Chinese, from "hello, how are you" to days of the week to numbers. We then discussed different aspects of Chinese, quirks of the language, and its reputation as a very intimidating language."
