Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Reviewed vocabulary from last session. We worked on learning the members of the family in French. We also learned additional colors, numbers and animals. I brought some worksheets with animals and numbers in order to help the girls learn. I also brought pictures of a family. I left these with the parents afterwords, so the girls could color and work on their vocabulary this week."
"This was the first session with the student. Math section timing is probably the area that requires the most work. She is scoring in the 22-23 range, and wants to get to the 26-27 range. We went over a math section and talked about the overall strategy we will be implementing over the 6 sessions we have together."
"Guided student in the approach to the SAT, in particular: how to structure a high scoring essay, what to include in a high scoring essay, and what types of questions are asked in the English grammar section."
"The student has a calculus test tomorrow that is covering using the first and second derivative to determine properties of a graph (concavity, increasing/decreasing, points of inflection). We also covered a little of thermodynamics for chemistry."
"Extensively went over the practice writing samples the student had done for the week. We did a bit of verbal practice and focused for the duration of the session on her writing. She is making excellent progress for her writing and reading skills!"
"Today we reviewed more math concepts, especially how to solve equations that contain fractions. We need to do more review and practice working with negative numbers. We then started to look at and discuss his English paper."
"The student and I began the session by going over his essay. He was upset about the way his essay turned out, but I encouraged him and we went over strategies for improving it. We went over the reading and math sections he had completed prior to the session, as well as the vocabulary words and roots I had given him previously. He had learned the vocab words for today. I did not give him new roots, but instead told him that he should go over all the root words that we had previously learned. In addition, we completed some more practice problems for the multiple-choice section of writing. As usual, he performed very well on these."
"We continued to work on ACT prep and reviewed the student's final full-length exam by going over the English, Math, and some Reading passages. As we reviewed the exam, I encouraged him to review the study guide I gave him for the English section. I also gave him some test taking tips on how to save time, how to eliminate answers, and how to strategize answering questions that he is unsure on. "
"Study prep for test tomorrow on structure of atom, sub-atomic particles, history of discovery sub-atomic particles, determine number of sub-atomic particles in a given element, determining atomic charge, mass#, atomic#, isotopes, periodic table, definition of amu, and mass of sub-atomic particles in nucleus. Worked on study sheet. Determined weak points. Mother will quiz student on frequently missed points. I believe we will bring up her chemistry grade as student is showing real progress."
"Went over general strategy in terms of timing and pacing of the SAT chemistry subject test. Then solved problems on a diagnostic exam he recently took to make sure he knows how to solve certain problem types. Also went over those problems in order to gauge what sections may be more critical to go over in detail. Lastly, went over the general plan on what sections I'll be teaching for the remainder of our sessions."
"The student and I met for the first time in her new Macro class to review several concepts she had questions about. We started by going over the answers to old exams, then reviewed several key concepts from her book, and ended by doing practice problems from a workbook."
"The student and I worked through a number of geometry problems. He hasn't had as much exposure to this subject, so I think it will become an area of focus as we continue forward. I made him write down the formulas he is likely to encounter on the test and subjected him to a number of problems. He was able to figure out the basic application of formulas to problems after a few attempts. We will continue to work in this area. His vocab and critical reading as improved."
