The student has a quiz on Thursday so we went over the material that will be on the quiz. She had to be able to understand solubility rules and double displacement reactions along with writing net ionic reactions. I showed her how to do all of these and gave her practice problems that I made up. She was able to get them all except on one of the problems!

We went over some recent topics in chemistry. We first started the session going over trends in the periodic table and I went over atomic theory, including the electron shielding effect, electronegativity, ionization energy, and ionic radius. The student definitely had a lot of gaps in her understanding of the material and I felt she was hearing about most of the material for the first time. We went over electron configuration and orbital diagrams, and, while it took a very long time to get the student to understand the theory behind it, I feel like I left her with a reasonable understanding of the material.

The student completed her homework over ions. We also reviewed the material she went over in class covering ionic bonding and covalent bonding. We also looked ahead and talked about upcoming chapters including bonds, bonding orbitals, hybrid orbitals.

We reviewed how to do a stepwise reaction, figuring out which is the limiting reactant and what the pH of the final solution is. We also discussed stoichiometry, valences, and change in energy of electrons.

We began our session with a few questions about geometry. The student had a clear understanding of how to solve for x given two equal lines or solve for x given one line is half of another line. We did an overall chemistry review in preparation for her cumulative test coming up. The student has improved her understanding of the basics of chemistry by a great deal. We reviewed solving problems with percent mass abundance and electron orbital layouts. I advised her to remember to draw out all diagrams and use different colors for geometry and to keep using her reference table for information about various elements in the future.

Today we prepared for the student's upcoming test on macromolecules and enzymes. We spent some time discussing enzymes at first - both the basic concepts of how they work, and where they are in different parts of the body with the roles they play. We also reviewed the material on macromolecules that she expects to see on the exam. At the end of the session, we talked through the normal process of a meal after it's eaten as it goes through the body's digestive and metabolic processes, and we included all the concepts about enzymes and macromolecules we had just discussed using a real world example. She seems to grasp these concepts now, and the factoids she had been having trouble memorizing she is now able to recall and reason through when asked about. She was feeling confident about taking her test at the end of the session.
