Began with some grammar worksheets so I could gauge his knowledge of the subject.  The student has a pretty good knowledge of the rules of applying punctuation. After going over another worksheet, he began writing out a script that he had been developing.  He became much more engaged and enthusiastic as we started working through the grammar in the script, and it really helped him understand how grammar can determine the tone, meaning, and direction of a sentence.  Excellent session.

The student and I read through her paper and discussed areas that seemed repetitious. We talked about re-arranging these paragraphs to eliminate redundancy and then we worked on grammar issues on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis. We talked about parallelism, matching all verbs in a sentence. We also worked on using pronouns to carry over the active subject, so she did not have to repeat each subject's name every sentence. We talked about the overall format of the assignment: whether to organize the subject headings with individual questions or to integrate each answer into a more fluid essay. Once we finished reading through the entire essay, and going over individual grammar issues, we talked about citation methods and then generated a comprehensive list of items to work on independently.
