Computer Science Tutoring review by Gabrielle in Cedar Park, TX
The student was still concerned about the Reading section, so we worked on a prose fiction and a natural science passage.  Her understanding of the questions is getting much better and she's answering more correctly, but her time is not quite yet as fast as we would like it to be.  We talked about timing and how much time she should give herself when working on a Reading selection.  Then, we moved onto to Science, working on one passage together, and then she worked on one on her own.  She stayed within the time limit she wants to aim for when taking the test, and was missing either no questions or only one per passage.  I think her confidence in the section is growing, and I recommended that she continued to working on Science, where she can only improve.  I think she feels better about her chances of increasing her score.

The student and I reviewed theorems involving quadrilaterals and used them in solving proofs.  We practiced proofs and went over the rules of parallelograms (rectangle, rhombus, square), trapezoids (isosceles trapezoids) and kites.  I showed him some techniques to solving systems of equations and told him what he should probably do to be fully ready for his test.  I think he will do quite well.

Final meeting with the student before she takes her entry exam. We talked a little more about the rate problems and additional ways to solve them that didn't involve using the grid. An example would be trains leaving stations at different times and when they hit each other. We also looked at a little bit of probability with the time we had left.

We covered some online practice algebra problems, as well as reviewed functions of functions. We spent most of the time practicing online for the reading section of the ACT, and discussing strategies to finding the correct answer quickly. The results of the third practice ACT show a one point overall improvement, and that the student understands the organizational requirements of the writing portion.

Today, the student and I worked on OS X: keyboard shortcuts, how to use the notification center for adding applets such as calculator, multi-touch gestures using the trackpad, the system preferences | keyboard | shortcuts feature, the cheat sheet app which allows the command button to be held down to see the keyboard shortcuts for the current app selected, and how to split the screen by holding down the green menu bar circle. We also went to various links to websites covering Mac productivity in general.
