Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student reported she'd received a 94 on a composition test. We worked from a draft and peer review to revise her essay. She is reasoning out complex ideas, making transitions between ideas, linking paragraphs, and interpretation of source materials."
"We completed a long research paper. The biggest struggle was forming concrete sentences. The attitude towards the material was interested. The biggest win was finally completing a long-term assignment."
"We reviewed a class assignment to defend, challenge or qualify a standpoint by deciding on an argument, thesis and finding quotations from sources."
"We finished editing the paper that will be submitted to a review board for an award for the student's prior teacher. The student was very positive during the entire session and did not hesitate to let me know when any of my changes were not comforting to her. She has notified me that she is now working on a research paper and that this will be the next area of work that we will be focusing on."
"This week we continued doing exercises regarding nouns, verbs and adjectives. Although the student has not yet learned them in school, I thought it would be a good idea to teach him those concepts in order to do more advanced exercises in the book. If I ask him to distinguish between nouns, verbs, and adjectives he will be hesitant to answer but he is usually correct. I also incorporated a few exercises where he was able to draw what he wrote, which he seems to enjoy and helps him not lose interest. We ended the last 5 minutes of our session with some more reading from his Minecraft book."
"The student revised her essay between yesterday and today, and made it much stronger, in my opinion. It had a much clearer narrative arc and was far more compelling. We spent the bulk of the session going over "big picture" notes--polishing major transitions (eliminating one whole paragraph), cleaning up some language, watching out for strange tonal moments, and coming up with a stronger concluding statement. We then spent the last half hour going over the nitpicky grammar and language notes I had. She has been a pleasure to work with, and I'm looking forward to following her career!"
