Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered indirect statements, reviewed ablative absolutes, and read two more stories about Hannibal. From now on we will review old grammar before doing the day's work."
"Today, we worked on translating a passage from Book 1 of The Aeneid. The student and I discussed translation order, prioritizing the verb and taking subordinate clauses one at a time. We worked through much new vocab. This translation was quite complex and really tested the concepts we've been working on like subjunctives and the different conjugations/declensions. Good job today!"
"Today the student and I spent the beginning of the session brainstorming ideas for an upcoming project in Latin class comparing Roman rulers to modern power figures. He has a fairly good grasp of what he wants to focus on, and we discussed a few other examples he may want to look into in his research. We spent the rest of the session working on sight translation of chapter 49. His class has been moving from a word-for-word translation strategy to a better-sounding, less literal style. This is something we have worked on occasionally before, but will need to begin doing more consistently from now on. He did a good job understanding strategies and how sentences are structured. More practice and exposure to this style of translating Latin will greatly help his abilities."
"We practiced verb forms for both the indicative active and passive systems. The student can form all his charts perfectly. He is excellent at it. He needed help to translate the verb forms both into and out of English. We practiced this for most of the session, and he made great improvements with just a little practice. For our next and last session before his test, we will review all the material in the same format as his test, and if we have time, practice translating verbs without a multiple-choice format."
"The student and I went through all the grammar portions of the blank tests. I recommend that she go through all the past worksheets we've done together (print out blank ones and rewrite the answers), especially for verbs. I'll send her notes on everything we did."
"The student did absolutely TERRIFIC today! We had a great first session. She sure does know her Latin. We worked on the five conjugations in the present tense active voice, and it's clear to me she has a strong command of this material. I look forward to our twice-a-week sessions this summer. Thanks, for your hard, good work today."
